With more than 17,000 islands, 700 local languages, and 300 ethnic groups, a rich artisanal culture is deeply embedded across Indonesia. Items are developed from every type of material imaginable, and more often than not display the identity of each particular region through the materials, methods, colours and designs used to developed all types of final product. An example of this is through textiles, with every colour, shape and arrangement forming a pattern that holds a special meaning and role in daily life, traditional events and customary ceremonies of those who knit the threads. Outside of these weavings, there is also no shortage of stunning and unique handicrafts and other goods that we come across, with their beauty – alongside the intricacy of traditional crafting techniques – ensuring an ongoing supply of products that support the continuance of community livelihoods across the country.
